2020
TodayGretel was liberated from a battery cage in 2020. She had a broken wing in two places. Today, she sleeps inside, steals greens from the bunnies, and reminds us every day why this work matters.
Saving one animal may not change the world,
but it will change the world for that one animal.
Become a Hen Hero
Monthly giving is the single most important thing you can do to help us help ex-factory farmed hens and other animals in need. It means we can plan ahead, say yes to emergency rescues and surrenders, and cover the ongoing cost of feed, vet care and rehabilitation. Our Hen Heroes are the reason we can keep going.

Gretel was liberated from a battery cage in 2020. She had a broken wing in two places. The facility she came from was notorious for the condition of its hens, and many had broken bones from the calcium depletion caused by constant egg production. She was thin, balding, and exhausted.
We got her wing treated and gave her a hormone implant to stop the cycle of laying two eggs a day. Her personality showed up almost immediately. She started stealing greens straight from our hands while we tried to feed the bunnies, and she got along beautifully with the other rescue girls.
In early 2023, she fell seriously ill. A vet visit revealed an inoperable tumour, and we had made the decision to let her go. Then, on the examination table, she opened her eyes and started pecking at the vet’s rings. We took her home instead. That was the right call. She now sleeps inside every night, has her own mealtime, and makes absolutely sure nobody forgets her share when food is being prepared.
Every hen, rooster or other animal who comes to us, whether from a farm, from a family who can no longer care for them, or found dumped and abandoned, needs the same things Gretel needed: vet care, safe housing, good food, time to recover, and lots of love. Your donations are what make all of that possible, not once, but every single day.
Where the money goes
Vet care. Many hens and other rescued animals arrive with broken bones, infections, tumours, or reproductive illness. Surgery, medications and hormone implants are our biggest ongoing expense.
Feed and supplements. Rescued battery hens and other animals in our care need high-quality feed and supplements to rebuild the bones and feathers the industry took from them.
Safe housing. Predator-proof coops, bedding, and secure outdoor runs so every hen, rooster and rescued animal can live safely.
Transport and rescue operations. Getting hens and other animals to safety costs fuel, crates, time, and coordination, whether they are coming from a farm, from a family who can no longer care for them, or found dumped and abandoned.
